biogas systems (design and installation)

BioGas Systems are the perfect balance between managing your organic waste and meeting your energy demands. Whether you are a farmer, a cook or the member of a large household, you’ve probably been generating a lot of organic waste that has been more than a handful with the compost bin or manure procurers as your only plan for managing it.

InspCorp will design and install you a BioGas System that is tailored and perfect for your resources and needs. With a BioGas system, you will be able to turn  your waste into reliable energy that you can now factor into your energy mix.

Every 1 kg of dry organic waste has the potential of producing 500 litres of BioGas and that translates to  about 100 minutes of cooking on a single burner. This will save you about sh 40 worth of LPG. So if you generate about 1 kg of dry organic matter per day then you have the potential of saving about 1200 shillings a month.

So you’re convinced that a BioGas System is what you need. Now what? Well, to begin with, you have to decide on the size of the system you want installed. This is usually determined by two factors. First, the amount of organic waste generate or have access to and secondly, the amount of gas you are aiming to generate and consume as part of your energy mix.

But we get how that can be too complicated. Contact us from our get a quote form and we’ll help you out with the decision! And to make it even easier, we have highlighted three popular BioGas systems from which you can choose which one best suits your needs.

monitoring and analysis

Digester monitoring system (dms) installation

The Digester Monitoring System (DMS) is a Remote Monitoring system designed to obtain performance-related data from your Reactor system.  The BioGas Reactor as any Bio-Reactor employs the use of complex colonies of micro-organisms that are very sensitive and delicate. Optimal performance of such microbial processes demands the maintenance of a very narrow range of operation parameters in addition to constant and consistent monitoring of the progress of the processes. As Bioenergyfarm reports, ‘most significant indication for a process disturbance is a noticeable decrease of biogas yield respectively methane concentration. The DMS is InspCorp’s proprietary innovation that aims at directly measuring the yield/output of your BioGas digester and its operation temperature to obtain critical data that will help you to understand the state of  your Digester.

The DMS system is based on the ESP8266  micro-controller coupled with an ultrasonic sensor, a temperature sensor and its WiFi Chip for remote data transmission.

24 hr monitoring will allow you to discover how well your reactor is performing on a specific type of feedstock as well as allow you to identify when your Biogas System is not on the right track. You will be able to detect how well your system copes to environmental or feed-stock changes and enable you to take appropriate measures early enough.

The Ministry of Energy attributes common causes of failure of bio-gas systems to poor monitoring and maintenance. A feasibility study ‘Promoting Biogas Systems in Kenya’ by Shell International in 2007 revealed that ‘a high proportion of the Biogas Digesters in the country operated below capacity, were dormant or in complete disuse after construction.’ The same report revealed that only 30%  of 2000 newly constructed BioGas Reactors were operational. This shows that without a proper monitoring system, 2 out of every 3 BioGas Digesters will fail.

Our DMS system will allow you to monitor your  Digester remotely at your own time as well as transmit your Reactor’s data to us for analysis where we will be able to assist you with Troubleshooting and Process Maintenance. In addition the DMS will be able to inform you of how much BioGas you have available for use, which will allow you to plan for you energy usage more effectively.

process maintenance and troubleshooting

Process Maintenance and Troubleshooting for your Bio-Reactor is essential for the optimal performance of the complex biological process it employs. As robust as they seem, BioGas reactors are usually very delicate in process and more often than not, a number of unsuspecting factors could conspire to lead your system to sudden failure if not detected and quickly rectified.

According to the Ministry of Energy, poor process maintenance is one of the chief causes resulting in the grim statistics that only about 30% of a sample of 2000 newly constructed BioGas Digesters in the country are showing satisfactory performance. This is affirmed in the ‘Promoting Biogas Systems in Kenya’ study by Shell International in 2007 which discovered that ‘a high proportion of the Biogas Digesters in the country operated below capacity, were dormant or in complete disuse after construction.’

There are generally two categories of faults that can occur in a Biogas system. Technical faults are the first type and are usually mechanical in nature i.e gas leaks, storage tank leaks, blocked Digester inlets/outlets. The second type of faults are Process Faults which are disturbances within the biochemical processes occurring within the reactor/digester leading to either an inhibition or a total stoppage of the methane-forming process. Bioenergyfarm reports,”In contrast to technical problems – which can regularly be solved quite fast – process disturbance are more difficult to correct and require a basic understanding of…biological processes and inhibition of anaerobic fermentation.” Process faults  therefore often require specialised attention that often involves a careful diagnosis to pinpoint the exact nature of the problem before a solution is prescribed.

If your Digester has been performing under-par then you are most likely facing a process fault. Or you might have even given up on your reactor after many weeks of zero production. Don’t worry, let InspCorp provide you with a solution plan that will resuscitate or optimise your system.

Our solution plan will typically involve a series of pre-solution site visits for troubleshooting, data collection and diagnostics followed by a procedural application of the solution and finally concluded with follow up check ups.

Please feel free to contact us using our ‘get a quote’ form. You can briefly describe what you’re  up against and we will get back to you as soon as possible to initiate the solution plan!
